The Dove That Flew Away

by Aaron Smith

/

about

This song is in memory of Marshall Walker of the Cave Slinkies, a talented, prolific songwriter and musician, and, for the past several years, a man I was proud and lucky to call my friend. We lost Marshall in April and I fell, for a few weeks, into a period of shock and grief. During this time, I wrote this song. I had to say something about how I felt. It's not a complicated song, and if my voice cracks toward the end, it's because that's how I felt. It's both an expression of how his loss hit me, and an appreciation of his many wonderful qualities. Hidden within the lyrics are references to some of his favorite songs and artists. If you knew him, you may spot some of them. For example, the first time I heard his music was his cover of Robert Johnson's "Hellhound On My Trail." The dove in the title and chorus refers to the emoji he used to "sign" everything he said on Twitter. Marshall's support and encouragement of my music, and his willingness to always be there if I needed advice meant the world to me, and I will miss him.

lyrics

So many people knew his name
Some had never seen his face
He found something better than fame
Playing for the love of the game
But the echoes came back empty today
So I brought a rose to his grave

I’ll pick up my guitar anyway
Although the strings will weep today
It’s just me and a memory
Of the dove that flew away

If a hellhound was on his trail
He would make it wag its tail
Tame the beast with a song
And that dog would sing along
We must sing when others would scream
Life is just too short of a dream

I’ll pick up my guitar anyway
Although the strings will weep today
It’s just me and a memory
Of the dove that flew away

I’m tangled up in my sorrow
I just want to talk some more
To put it very bluntly now
Death has closed and barred the door
Where is the bird? Where is the heart?
Why must we stop what we start?

The conversation will not go on
No quarter to feed the phone
His guitar sits all alone
Oh my God, my brother is gone

I’ll pick up my guitar anyway
Although the strings will weep today
It’s just me and a memory
Of the dove that flew away
